The
Diggle Hotel
A trip down memory lane
We discovered the Diggle Hotel many
years ago after a two-year search. Its not really that isolated
you just have to know where in Diggle you are going. The easiest
way is to ask for Sam Road and follow it over the railway
bridge and you can’t miss it.
Our visit to this traditional English pub was like taking
a trip down memory lane. The pub is time-honoured in a conventional
manner in that it is unspoiled by modern day designers and
serves genuine real ales such as Black Sheep and Bombardier,
as well as Timothy Taylor’s championship beers at their
best.
The pub is warm, cosy and like its landlady, Pauline, welcoming.
It did not take long for us to feel comfortable and relaxed.
We felt especially at home with the low volume background
music gently taking us back to the 50s. It is certainly not
a place for out and out ravers.
For diners there is an A La Carte menu and two specials boards
to choose from. Some of the dishes are well-known favourites,
but others are delightfully different – like the choice
of Saddleworth made sausages if you go for the bangers and
mash. The Diggle Hotel specialises in good wholesome homemade
food, prepared and cooked in-house from locally purchased
produce.
I ordered the Homemade Steak and Kidney Pie recommended to
me by one of the regulars. Made from Pauline’s own secret
recipe, it was served piping hot in an earthenware dish and
topped with a delicious crust. Accompanied by chips, carrots
and cauliflower; the vegetables were cooked with just a slight
hint of crispiness - exactly to my liking.
My wife was equally impressed with her selection; a tasty
Vegetable Lasagne served with garlic bread and salad. We rounded
off an excellent lunchtime meal with coffee and fresh cream
at a total cost of around £12 for the two of us.
Bar snacks and meals are served Monday to Friday, 12.00 noon
to 2.00pm and between 5.00pm and 9.30pm. At weekends and Bank
holidays it is throughout the day between 12.00 noon and 9.30pm.
