Make one in ten - none in ten
Another year has come and gone and still the incidence of
breast cancer remains at alarming levels. Across Europe
one woman develops breast cancer every 2 minutes and one
dies of the disease every 6 minutes. How am we stop these
statistics effecting the next generation? The Genesis Appeal
believes the correct strategies to follow lie in prevention
and early diagnosis.
What are we doing to promote these aims? In 2001 we opened
a breast cancer prevention centre in temporary accommodation
in Manchester. This last year several hundred women have
benefited from advice and screening at this Centre. Others
are participating in our research projects. Three internationally
known Professors, who are looking at various possible ways
of minimising risks, lead these projects. We are continuing
to support Michelle Harvie, a research dietician. We also
run the National Hereditary Breast Cancer Helpline, with
the help of a government grant from the Department of Health.
Our vision is to open a purpose-built Prevention Centre,
which will house research, education, screening and diagnosis
all under one roof. This last year has seen our campaign
achieve national coverage in newspapers, magazines and television.
We are building an excellent team of health workers who
are committed to this project - we now need somewhere to
put them all. |

As always, the most important
work within our charity is carried out by 'behind the
scenes' volunteers. Many of whom spend hours and hours
of their spare time making things happen for us, often
for very little public recognition. Once again, I would
like to give special thanks to them and to you for your
support.
